Memorial Day in San Francisco
We had this Monday off for the Memorial Day holiday, so I thought I'd head up to San Francisco to wander about for a bit...
On the way up the road the fog spilling over the hills was spectacular. These fogs make San Francisco cold and damp at times even in summer, but Palo Alto is mostly protected by the hills. This photo completely fails to do justice to how spectacular it really is.

I stopped at a vista point to take my picture, but it was already being used by a film crew. Either the two on the bench really dislike each other, or this was a dramatic moment being filmed....

A tree I rather liked.

Although much of the seafront in San Francisco has been tourist-ified, it is still a working fishing port...
...for the few that can afford the high fees to land their catch in the shadow of the downtown skyscrapers.
The boat at the front on the right is called the Ruth B which reminded me of my Ruth, who I miss very much.
I was enjoying the sunshine for most of the afternoon, but the fog was always on the horizon, and the Golden Gate Bridge is mostly obscured.
My wandering takes me to the maritime museum. This is the Balclutha, built in Glasgow in 1886.
It's a life on the ocean wave....
A long way from home, but looking great and very interesting to visit.

The ocean going steam tug Hercules, for many years the most powerful in the area.
Eureka, an old ferry at the Hyde Street Pier.
Alcatraz, just escaping the fog.
The ships cat on the ferry Eureka.
Oh sorry - looks like I've disturbed you...

The fresnel lense of a lighthouse, preserved at the maritime museum.

Although the streets may be flat at the shore, they soon head skyward up the hills. A good reason to take public transport rather than walking if you ask me!
