Holiday in France

We took the Hoverspeed Seacat from Dover to Calais then drove town to the Loire Valley to stay in a small Gite, near Saumur. Chateaux, wine, cheese, fresh bread, vinyards, rivers, relaxation. Great!

Picture_0143.JPG We left Dover behind us as we sailed on a Hoverspeed SeaCat...
Picture_0141.JPG ... a fast crossing to Calais, but rather cold even in the sun.

Picture_0139.JPG Ruth and Ray breakfasting in the sun.
Picture_0138.JPG Ruth chilling by the pool. The pool was a bit chilled too this early in the year...
Picture_0134.JPG ...being solar heated and sitting at about 16 degrees centigrade. We were too chicken to use it!
Picture_0133.JPG This is the front of the converted stables we were staying in...
Picture_0132.JPG ...and the farm house on the other side of the courtyard.
Picture_0131.JPG There is also barn (complete with table tennis) and a petanque court.
Picture_0137.JPG A friendly lizard that used to sunbathe with us.
Picture_0136.JPG A nearby Chateau at Giseaux...
Picture_0135.JPG ...where Ray made friends with the locals much to Kirsty's amusement.
Picture_0130.JPG A more spectacular Chateau, this one at Azay-le-Rideau...
Picture_0129.JPG ...and the obligatory couply photograph.
Picture_0127.JPG Azay-le-Rideau is set on the river and surrounded by running water...
Picture_0126.JPG ...you could even go fishing out of some of the windows if you wanted!
Picture_0125.JPG From the back it looks like something out of a fairytale.
Picture_0123.JPG Ruth was unreasonably happy to be watching...
Picture_0124.JPG ...a torrent of water pouring over a wier!
Picture_0121.JPG This is the clock tower of the Chateau at Chinon....
Picture_0120.JPG ...where the Chatueau is in a dominant position on the hill...
Picture_0118.JPG ...providing spectacular views...
Picture_0119.JPG ...which Ruth felt compelled to partially obscure...
Picture_0117.JPG ...as of course did I!
Picture_0116.JPG Ruth in subterranean passage once used by Kinsg to visit their lady-friends in the town below.
Picture_0115.JPG The chateau also overlooks some vinyards... location, location, location!
Picture_0114.JPG The clock tower from the town of Chinon below.
Picture_0113.JPG The view upriver from where Ruth and I stopped for to eat our ice-cream, under the shade of a spreading tree.
Picture_0112.JPG The zoo at Doue satisfied Ruth's obsessive need to observe giraffes...
Picture_0110.JPG ...which all wanted to eat out of the highest feed box in spite of a variety being provided!
Picture_0108.JPG Red panda's. Very cute.
Picture_0107.JPG Parrots...
Picture_0106.JPG ...Flamingos (and a lesser spotted Ruth).
Picture_0105.JPG The flamingos are so vain they have a large mirror in their enclosure!
Picture_0104.JPG My animal identification skills are starting to fail me, but I think this is a lynx...
Picture_0103.JPG ...and these are leopards. Rare ones.
Picture_0102.JPG Powerful looking animals. Nice Kitty!
Picture_0101.JPG Smile for the camera! Oh well...
Picture_0100.JPG The zoo was in an old lime quarry, spectacular in itself in places.
Picture_0097.JPG Iguanas...
Picture_0096.JPG ...lions (sleepy)...
Picture_0094.JPG ...and vultures. There are truly nasty, sinister animals.
Picture_0093.JPG I was a little nervous this close to them...
Picture_0092.JPG ... and I'd only just left (fast) when this photo was taken, because I though the one on the pole was going to jump onto my head!
Picture_0088.JPG Monkeys picking feas off their babies...
Picture_0087.JPG ...swinging from the trees...
Picture_0085.JPG ...and eating apples.
Picture_0084.JPG This play-fight was soooo cute to watch (the one at the top is just a youngster), they look so human.
Picture_0081.JPG Photo with a human for comparison.
Picture_0080.JPG Tigers...
Picture_0079.JPG ...just pacing the perimeter, as if looking for a way out.
Picture_0078.JPG Goats with a scary llama. Ruth tells me it was something else, but I swear it was a llama.
Picture_0077.JPG Otters were also very sweet...
Picture_0076.JPG ...playing and chasing each other round their enclosure.
Picture_0075.JPG These monkeys were really little, and totally fascinated by me and my camera.
Picture_0073.JPG More monkey business.
Picture_0072.JPG Ruth also loved the penguins...
Picture_0071.JPG ...and wanted to steal one...
Picture_0063.JPG ...to amuse her in the bath I think!
Picture_0069.JPG Ruth with the jaws of a primordial shark.
Picture_0068.JPG Cheetah, also patrolling like a caged animal.
Picture_0066.JPG It was pretty hot so that thick coat must have been quite un-bear-able...
Picture_0065.JPG ...unless you sit in a tree to capture the breeze.
Picture_0062.JPG A modern troglodyte (cave) dwelling at Rocheimer...
Picture_0061.JPG ...complete with Ruth posing as a troglodyte.
Picture_0060.JPG Ruth with the case of wine we purchased from a small vinyard. And the one that got away!
Picture_0059.JPG Vinyard. Source of all wine. Ian like.
Picture_0058.JPG The French seem to feel that it is normal to use sweetcorn husks as fuel for a barbecue. I disagree.
Picture_0057.JPG Postcard buying in Saumur...
Picture_0055.JPG ...before a visit to a local cafe.
Picture_0054.JPG Ruth with another missed acquisition opportunity. So much fizz, so little time!
Picture_0052.JPG Old banger at Le-Mans museum...
Picture_0050.JPG ...and an old 24-hour race car..
Picture_0049.JPG ...and finally a more modern one!
Picture_0045.JPG Me on the ferry back. Looks like I caught the sun a little.
Picture_0038.JPG Ruth sheltering from the wind. Again. The end of a beautiful week.
